For more efficient planning, we have split our expedition into multiple parts. Part 0 focuses on arrival in Kathmandu and necessary on-site preparation. We will then travel on our own to Taplejung and hike to Kanchenjunga Base Camp. From there, we will continue to Olangchunggola and meet our guides and porters along the way in Ghunsa, where we will also have our first resupply point.
Part 3 will likely cover the most remote trekking section, from Olangchunggola to the Makalu area where we will have our second resupply point in Yangla Kharka. In Part 4, we plan to cross the high passes Sherpani Col, West Col, and Amphu Lapcha to reach the Everest region. In Part 5, we will split again from our guides and porters. Depending on the remaining time we plan to explore the Everest region. Part 6 covers the travel from Lukla back to Kathmandu.
Arrival in Kathmandu. We need to reserve two to three days to meet with the guides, prepare all equipment for the resupply points and get the necessary permissions. From Kathmandu we'll travel to Taplejung either via direct flight or flight to Bhadrapur and drive to Taplejung.
Tea house Trekking from Taplejung to Ghunsa and Kangchenjunga Base Camp where the actual Great Himalayan Trail will start in the most north-east section of Nepal. We will do this on our own without guide or porter support. From Ghunsa, a detour to Kangchenjunga Base Camp is planned. On this part of the route, tea houses are partially available or you can do tent trekking with your own provisions. Will take about 8 days and two spare rest days
Start of the Great Himalaya Trail at Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Return to Ghunsa where we will meet with the guide/portes and do our first resupply. Togegher we will then cross the Nango La Pass at 4,300 m which will include the first two camping nights. After that, there is only one hut accommodation before reaching Olangchung Gola, away from the usual trekking routes. Duration: 6 days from KBC.
Seven days over the high passes from Yangla Kharka to Chhukung. Sherpani Col, West Col, Amphu Lapcha are rather difficult passes above 6000m. They will require additional alpine equipment, a tent and self-sufficient supplies. We will have our second resupply point at the beginning of this part in Yangla Kharka. Two replacement porters will get us new food and the necessary mountaineering equipment for the high passes.
Depending on the remaining time left we plan to explore the Everest region as the final highlight of the journey. Options are to visit Everest Base Camp, the nearby ascent of Kala Patthar with close-up panoramas of Everest, Nuptse, and Pumori. Beyond the main Everest Basecamp trail, we can do side trip to hike to Ama Dablam Base Camp which leads into a quieter valley dominated by the south face of Ama Dablam. If weather and conditions permit, we plan additional crossing the Three Passes Kongma La, Cho La, and Renjo La and a potential ascend of Gokyo Ri, which offers a expansive panorama to Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu, as well as the lakes of the Gokyo Valley below.
